How do I get protection from immediate damage ?
Most immediate damage would be caused by high voltage Spikes & Surges and Voltage fluctuations. High Voltage Spikes can cause instantaneous component damage.
Spike/Surge Suppressors are widely available to counter the Spike & Surge threat. These suppressors run the gamut from very low cost, single element, slow response 1,000 Surge Amp units up to multi-stage rapid response 60,000 (or more) Surge Amp hybrid systems.
Quality Protection Systems employ a combination of suppressor elements for superior spike / surge suppression and usually incorporate multi-element (sometimes multi-stage) interference filters to deliver the cleanest power possible to operating equipment.

Not surprisingly, as response speed, suppression capabilities and interference filtering rise, device cost also increases. The faster a protective device can respond to Spike voltage, the more protection your sensitive equipment receives.
For a given Spike threat, the more Surge Amps a protective device can handle, the better the Spike will be suppressed.
Voltage fluctuations can be
controlled with a voltage regulator;
a high tech device designed to restore your high or low line voltage to normal operating
conditions.
Two basic AC power regulators are available:
ferroresonant regulators
tap changer (voltage jumper) regulators.
Ferroresonant regulators (the more expensive device) operate to correct voltage variations on a continuous basis and also incorporate inherent spike/surge suppression and interference filtering. Some better designs boast supplemental spike, surge and interference suppression.
Tap changer regulators make 8 or 10 volt corrective jumps to restore equipment power to a level near optimum. They possess no inherent suppression or filtering capabilities, but usually incorporate at least minimum protective circuitry.
How to tell the difference between High Performance
regulators and cheaper regulators?
