Isolation Transformers - Variable Output
Traditionally, isolation transformers have been utilized in several broad applications.
1. Safety
Maintenance personnel often work on energized electrical and electronic equipment. An isolation transformer positioned between incoming power mains and equipment undergoing maintenance provides a "floating" power source which isolates the engineer or technician from hazards associated with working on "live" circuits.
A variac operating in conjunction with the isolation transformer permits personnel to safely alter equipment voltages to specified operating levels.
In addition, maintenance or test laboratories often use the variac / isolation transformer combination to obtain operating data for over-voltage and under-voltage conditions so vital for long term reliability.
2. Interference reduction
Noise and interference transfer from primary to secondary can effectively be reduced either by positioning individual primary and secondary windings on separate bobbins located adjacent to one another. This effectively reduces capacitance between primary / secondary, which reduces electrical noise coupling.
Another design technique employed to reduce inter-winding capacitance for electrical interference reduction is the Faraday shield. This is a metallic, usually copper, shield placed between the primary and secondary windings. This shield is usually connected to ground and effectively reduces inter-winding capacity by 50%.
Again, a variac is often used to establish the specified operating point.
Also, interference can be reduced in some equipments by choosing an optimum operating voltage - a situation easily augmented with the variac - isolation transformer configuration.
Voltage Regulator - Variable Output
Normally Voltage Regulators are employed to reduce wide power line voltage swings for consistent operation. Best regulation, and hence most consistent equipment performance, is achieved with a ferroresonant regulator.
So called regulators, tap-changers or voltage-jumpers, correct voltage irregularities by jumping in 7 - 10 volt steps! This will not lead to consistent operation, as these voltage jumps will pass through the variac to equipment.
By employing a ferroresonant Voltage Regulator / Variac combination, stable operating conditions can be established and maintained.
Other Uses of Variac controlled conditioned power
Plastic foam is often formed with a hot wire cutting tool. More precise applied voltage to the cutting tool ensures more precise plastic foam cutting.
Many chemical processes require tight temperature control. True, quality thermostats will hold the temperature to tight tolerances, but some engineers have found that supplying precise regulated power to the thermostat controller results in even better chemical processing due to the tighter temperature control.
Photography lights are sensitive to applied voltage.
Subtle color changes can be traced to applied voltage variations.
Use of a Variac controlled variable voltage regulator can stabilize these subtle
color shifts, resulting in consistent photography results, less photographer frustration
and greater client satisfaction.
