Application Note:
for Satellite Dish Power

Often commercial AC power must be brought to a satellite dish location for the sole purpose of operating a small power supply which delivers low voltage direct current (DC) to the actual dish.

To meet local codes, a licensed electrician must do the installation and often a local electrical inspector is required to bless the installation. Rework may be required.

Precious time and money is spent to meet these requirements.

The solution is simplicity itself.

Low voltage wiring can usually (check local code) be routed by unlicensed installation technicians.

1. Install a wall plug transformer at a convenient wall electrical outlet in the building. 

Choose a transformer with AC output voltage brought out on screw terminals and which delivers sufficient voltage and current to power the satellite dish.

Also, select a transformer with integral mounting bracket, permitting easy and secure  mounting to  wall socket with a retaining screw.

2. Route a 2 conductor cable from wall mount transformer to satellite dish.  If a portion of cable run is outdoors, all-weather cable should be used.  Be sure cable is sized for current and cable length.

3. Install a power converter designed to convert ac voltage delivered by transformer / cable to DC voltage and current required to power the satellite dish.

DC dish power is usually supplied through a concentric plug.  Be certain power converter plug matches receptacle on the satellite dish.

4. Significant time and $$ savings can be achieved using this AC low voltage power technique.

Data Protection

Most commercial satellite systems are handling large volumes of data.

Often, this data originates, and is used, some distance from the actual transmitter / receiver equipment.  Our experience has shown that data links over 50 - 75 feet become susceptible to atmospheric and electrical induced interference and damaging spikes and surges.

Data is often transmitted over RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 cable systems.  Other times the satellite system is an integral part of a network system, with EtherNet 10Base-T or 100Base-T formats employed.
