Protection Doesn't Cost ... It Pays !

TIP OF THE MONTH

In most parts of the country, October - December begins the winter storm season. Now is a good time to completely check out your system for satisfactory equipment protection - all your equipment: AC power, modem, video lines, etc

First, check your equipment grounding

** Tighten screws on grounding cables
** Be certain protector ground cables are installed
** Be certain all 3-prong cable plugs have ground pin
** Use ac socket checker to verify ground is present

Also, it is a very good idea to check all electrical terminal screws in your electrical circuit breaker box and at your equipment premise or wall sockets.

Power Line Protectors should be checked or installed for all hi-tech equipment.

Modem protectors should be checked or installed.

As you all know, winter storms create both massive surges and severe interference. Your protectors should include effective surge suppressors and interference filters.

Phone lines connecting modem and power lines to your equipment travel over many miles of countryside, picking up surges and noise interference to wreck havoc on your system.  Keep in mind that phone lines are often used for remote site access in ATM installations,  remote data recording facilities and remote control systems

These lines should not be neglected. Of less susceptibility, but still a threat, are shorter lines you have to various equipments.

Check 'em out.

Of course winter brings added central heating problems for your equipment

Consider the extra heat.

Be sure there is plenty of air circulation. Keep in mind that most equipment will get quite hot, even if your office is comfortable.

Verify all air filters are clean. Replace all disposable air filters. Remember - it is best to remove and clean air filters outside equipment cabinets. Clean up residual dust within cabinets.

Indoor equipment sometimes is subjected to severe heat stress due to poor ventilation and air circulation.

Be sure your equipment isn't vulnerable because of clogged air filters

Next, consider equipment environment.

Place equipment so hot air does not directly strike sensitive equipment. Do not place equipment directly on hot air ducts or radiators.

If you can't avoid hot air ducts, try placing a small baffle or fan to redirect hot blasts away from equipment.

Why worry about hot air striking equipment?

If Your equipment is located directly in the path of hot air ducts, your system will continually cycle between getting HOT when Heating System has cycled "ON" and becoming cool when Heating has cycled "OFF".

Printed circuit boards, connector slots, chip sockets and internal wiring will continually change dimension with the thermal cycling.

Eventually this thermal cycling will loosen connections or cause metal fatigue breakage.

Treat your equipment right AND it will provide you long term service.
