Some states have already been burdened this year with rolling blackouts and brownouts. It appears more states will follow down this road.

Many questions we receive touch on the issue of "How to cope with this problem?"

First, people want protection from the economic cost of lost power.

A.

At first thought, it appears a UPS is needed. Great, but most units only provide 5 - 15 minutes operating time before batteries are depleted. True, some units permit cascading batteries to extend operating time, but 1 or 2 hours operating time appears to be the economic limit.

Longer term protection is best achieved with a gasoline driven ac generator. Modestly priced units are available that will provide power for your computer system and a few lights.

Although extremely handy, these generators have a few drawbacks.
a. Voltage varies widely
b. Most generators create electrical noise interference which shows up on power lines and equipment
c. Generators often create severe start-up and shut-down voltage fluctuations spikes and surges

Ideally, output voltage from a field generator should be conditioned before it is applied to valuable computing equipment.

Many field generator users install high surge capability filter suppressors to reduce generator spikes, surges and interference. In addition to suppressing generator high energy spikes and surges, high performance interference filtering greatly reduce generator interference, all of which contribute to smooth, trouble free equipment operation.

What can you expect from brown-outs & black-outs ? ?

If power has been disrupted for an extended period, the starting load when power is ultimately restored is gigantic.

Worse. The starting load is usually inductive - that is - thousands of motors all trying to start at once draw thousands of amps from the re-activated power lines.

Power Company protective circuit breakers quickly trip out. All this energy stored in motor inductance throughout the neighborhood create surges and spikes from 1,000 to 2,000 volts over local lines to equipment located over an area encompassing many blocks or miles.

What can I do to reduce or eliminate power loss or brownout Damage and Interference?

Interference filters, both Common Mode and Differential Mode, can be installed in the power line feeding equipment you are trying to protect. This will eliminate, or greatly reduce, disruptive effects of incoming electrical noise.

Installation of heavy duty industrial or laboratory grade surge suppressors are extremely effective at reducing equipment damage caused by power disruptions.
