For Video Cameras, Monitors, Amplifiers and Cable Systems Protection

Video systems are everywhere!

Of course, we're all familiar with television and computers. 

In addition, there are security cameras and monitors installed on premise and in parking lots to ensure safety of personnel and property.

Medical / dental cameras and display monitors are widely utilized to the point where some medical and dental procedures are performed solely while watching a video display.

Production, warehouse and retail operations employ cameras and monitors for a host of security, inventory and processing programs.

You get the idea - Video systems are everywhere!

Unfortunately, these systems are all subject to disruptive interference and damaging surges  and spikes.

This Application Note pertains to remedies we have successfully designed and installed to combat a wide range of video maladies.

AC Power Line Interference and Surges

The most common source of disruptive interference and damaging surges is the AC Power Line. Fortunately Electronic Specialists has a comprehensive line of Power Line Protective Products that have successfully been deployed to combat these scourges. Security and industrial installers and users generally use the single socket protectors.  They do this, not to save a few $, but to prevent someone in the future connecting other equipment to the same electrical source.  In effect they have installed a dedicated line to their equipment. Commercial or Industrial Grade Protectors are most widely used for these applications.

Home Theatre / Surround Sound systems generally install Laboratory Grade protection, as this provides very wide band interference suppression. Improved picture quality and sound reception are provided.

Cable Problems

Cable is widely used throughout the world. Originally designed for commercial TV program distribution, Cable now carries local programming, hi-end audio and computer internet access. Further, where originally there was one TV installed per user, today there may be several TV and several Computer internet connections.

Even in the old days, an occasional ground loop or surge damage was encountered.  Ground loops in general are proliferating. Audio/video ground loops are caused by multiple ground points in the signal path. Since the Cable provider, each TV and computer all have return paths to ground, it is quite easy for ground loop conditions to be established. Ground loops generally cause video "hum bars" - a condition where dark or light bars slowly drift vertically through the picture.  In audio one generally hears a raspy buzz. Internet connections sometimes operate poorly or erratically.

Our cable isolator has been designed to eliminate hum bars and have been widely installed.  As a bonus, the cable isolator also provides protection against surges impressed on the incoming cable.

Additionally, some cables pick up interference from storms, radio / TV stations, industrial equipment or other broadcast services. Our RFI interference choke  has provide relief for interference entering via the cable.

Commercial Video

Cable Spikes & Surges

Video from remote cameras or to remote mixers, monitors or controls often is routed considerable distances over coaxial cable. Spikes, Surges and interference may sometimes be induced onto the video cable either by lightning or other spherics, or from power lines of nearby industrial machinery.

Installation of the Video Guard has successfully prevented damage, especially on the longer lines. Often interference is also present on these coaxial video lines. Coaxial line interference can be countered with the Electronic Specialists RFI interference choke.

For situations where surge damage and interference are present on the same coaxial line, the Video Guard system and RFI Interference choke system can generally be combined into a single unit.

Cable Hum Pickup

Often existing power line fields induce significant hum voltage on video cables. Annoying monitor hum bars may be visible, causing difficulty in viewing and screen  interpretation.

Surveillance and video sites with this problem have experienced very good results with our Model VB/HB-BNC  Video Guard Hum Bucker.  Simply install in the affected video line at the monitor.

Video sites that are susceptible to spike / surge damage and experience hum pickup may want to consider our combined Video Guard Protector and Hum Bucker to solve both these problems with one easy fix.  Model VGHB/PRT-BNC is now available

Other Protection

Power (AC or DC) for the remote camera or monitor is often routed with the coaxial cable.  Power protection can easily be provided by hard-wire (wire in) suppressors or filter suppressors. Filter-Suppressors shown on this page are designed for 120 Volts, but can easily be constructed for any desired AC or DC Voltage

Combined Video and Power remote equipment protection, shown here, can be designed to accommodate most installations.

Video Amplifiers are often used to drive signal to a remote monitor or mixer; other times the video amplifier may be located remotely. This video amplifier protector can be designed with "BNC", "F", "RCA" of other signal connectors installed on the equipment
